Population Composition

The Nagaland is an Indo-Asiatic people consisted of above 20 tribes, and several subtribes, and each has the specific geographic distribution. Though, many cultural traits, the tribes maintain isolation. One of the largest tribes was Konyaks, followed by the Aos, Tangkhuls, Semas, and Angamis. Amongst other tribes were Lothas, Sangtams, Phoms, Changs, Khiemnungams, Yimchungres, Zeliangs, Chakhesangs (Chokri), and Rengmas.

The Naga tribes speak 60 languages and all of these belonging to the Sino-Tibetan language. In some of the areas, dialects are different from one village to another. The traditional Naga religion believes to be the main creator afterlife. They believed in nature and considered it to be the invisible force, deities, and medicine. In the 19th century, Christianity was introduced, and Baptist missionaries have started living in Nagaland. Resultantly, the population consisted of two-third Christians, Hindus and Muslims.

Agriculture

Agriculture takes place amongst nine-tenths of the population. The state grows crops such as Rice, corn, small millets, pulses, oilseeds, fibres, sugarcane, potato, and tobacco. Nagaland depends on various imports of the food in the neighboring states of India. People practice jhum which led to soil erosion and also causes loss of soil fertility. Some of the places such as Angamis and Chakhesangs are located in the southern region of Kohima use irrigation as well as terracing. Forestry is the main source of employment and income.
