Districts in India 2024

India is a large country divided into 28 states and 8 Union Territories. There are 787 Districts in India in 2024. Prior to Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh official bifurcation into two Union Territories on 31st October 2019, there were 29 states and 7 Union Territories. Also two Union Territories Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu merged with effect from 26 January 2020, making the UT count to 8. What’s New

  • February 2024: Arunachal Pradesh added two new districts Bichom Keyi and Panyor taking the districts tally to 27.
  • August 2023: Rajasthan added 19 new districts making its tally 50.
  • January 2023: Assam announced of the merger of newly formed districts back to existing districts.
  • 4 Apr 2022: 13 more districts added to Andhra Pradesh making its total 26.
  • 26 Jan 2022: Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu merged.
  • 20 Dec 2021: Nagaland added 3 new districts in Chumukedima, Niuland and Tseminyu.
  • 10 Nov 2021: Mairang was added 12th district of Meghalaya state.
  • 15 Aug 2021: Chhattisgarh announced of additon of 4 New districts Manendragarh, Mohla Manpur, Sarangarh Bilaigarh and Sakti.
  • 14 May 2021: Malerkotla added as 23rd district of Punjab.
  • 19 November 2020: Vijayanagara approved to be 31st district of Karnataka.
  • 10 August 2020: Bajali, which was a civil subdivision under the Barpeta district, has been approved by the cabinet to become the 34th district of Assam.
  • 7 April 2020: Mayiladuthurai was announced to be 38th district of Tamil Nadu. It was carved out of Nagapattinam district amid COVID-19 epidemic.
  • 18 March 2020: One new district will be Maihar carved from Satna district.
  • 11 February 2020: Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi, the 28th district of Chhattisgarh has been officially inaugurated by C.M. Bhupesh Baghel in Feb 2020. The state with 1,60,000+ hectares area will have Gaurela, Pendra and Marwahi as three Tehsils, 166 Gram Panchayats and 222 Villages.
  • 26 January 2020: Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu UT merged.
  • Kumbakonam and Pollachi could be next districts inline in the year 2020 in Tamil Nadu. Edappadi K Palaniswami’s government is planning to carve Kumbakonam from Thanjavur and Pollachi from Coimbatore. In 2019 Tamil Nadu added several new districts.
  • 2 November 2019: India has officially published a new political map of India.
  • 31 October 2019: Jammu and Kashmir officially bifurcated into two union territories. Girish Chandra Murmu will be appointed Lieutenant Governors for the Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir. R K Mathur will be appointed Lieutenant Governors for the Union territories of Ladakh.
  • 19 September 2019: Vijayanagara could become 31st district of Karnataka as announced by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.
  • 15 August 2019: Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami announced that Vellore district will be trifurcated with two new districts named Ranipet and Tirupattur.
  • 15 August 2019: Gaurela Pendra Marwahi has been announced to be the new district in Chhattisgarh.
  • 5 August 2019: Jammu and Kashmir will be divided into two union territories. First remains Jammu Kashmir region and second as Ladakh. Jammu Kashmir will have a legislative assembly with L G appointed and Ladakh will be without legislative assembly. This will come in effect from 31st October 2019.
  • 18 July 2019: Tamil Nadu announced to have two more districts. Tenkasi and Chengalpattu districts will be carved out of Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram respectively.
  • 8 January 2019: Tamil Nadu will have new district named Kallakurichi being carved out of Villupuram.
