What is LPG Subsidy?

A subsidy is an aid provided by the government on a commodity or activity such that it becomes affordable for people to purchase.

For example- A farmer gets subsidies for using electricity for agriculture, the normal rate for electricity is Rs.6/unit but for the farmer, this rate will be reduced to Rs.2/unit. In some states, the farmer can get free electricity as well.

LPG Subsidiary is a subsidy for purchasing the LPG Gas cylinder that every individual household gets. India spends a massive Rs.37,256.21 crores for LPG subsidy in 2021. You can claim up to 12 subsidized cylinders a year.

How to Check LPG Subsidy Status?

You can check the LPG Subsidy status online by following these steps-

  • Visit the official website of your gas delivery network’s website i.e. Indane Gas, Bharat Gas, or HP Gas, and click on the subsidy status check button
  • Now, you’ll have two options-
    • Check LPG Subsidy through LPG ID/Aadhaar Number
    • Check LPG Subsidy through Consumer Number
  • After selecting the option, click on the proceed button
  • Now, based on the selection, you’ll have to enter anyone of the details like LPG ID/Aadhaar Number, Consumer Number followed by clicking on Submit button
  • After clicking on the submit button, your subsidy status will be displayed online

How to Give Up LPG Gas Subsidy?

If you come from a well-off background and do not require the subsidy for purchasing Gas, then you also have the option to opt out of the Gas subsidy scheme. Here, you have two option to do that, which is as follows-

  • Opt out of the LPG Gas subsidy scheme and pay full price for the gas.
  • Subscribe to the Gas pipeline service and pay a monthly bill for the usage of the gas.

How to Give up Gas Subsidy?

You can follow these steps to give up your Gas subsidy-

Online

  • Visit the official website of My LPG or follow this link- www.mylpg.in
  • Click on the give up subsidy button followed by selecting the company (HP, Indane, Bharat Gas) supplying you with the LPG Gas
  • After selection, you’ll be redirected to the login page of the respective company
  • Now, register yourself into the account by providing your Aadhaar number or Bank account details including the Bank IFSC Code or LPG ID
  • If you are already registered, you can simply login to your account
  • After logging in, click on the opt-out of the subsidy button and also toggle the option to show his/her name in the list of “scroll of honors” on the website
  • After that, your LPG Subsidy will be canceled

Offline

You can also opt out of the subsidy by submitting Form-5 to the distributors by sending this form via letter or visiting the gas agency and submitting this form physically.

What is Gas Pipeline?

Apart from opting out of the LPG Subsidy, you can also subscribe to the Gas Pipeline option. Gas Pipeline connection or Piped Natural Gas (PNG) is different than LPG. LPG Stands for Liquified Petroleum Gas which is a by-product from the refining of crude oil.

PNG is the natural gas that is supplied using the Pipeline. It is a much more convenient way of getting a supply of gas. The billing of the gas subscription will be done monthly just like electricity bills.

On average, the cost of PNG per month comes out at Rs.950/- whereas the cost of LPG comes out to be Rs.1200/-. Both of these figures are approx. however, PNG is cheaper than LPG.

But the initial cost of setting up PNG is much higher than the LPG. LPG comes with no initial setup cost. However, the installation of the pipeline requires an initial setup cost.

How much subsidy does the Government of India provide per cylinder?

The average subsidy cost provided by the Government of India is Rs.200/- per cylinder per year up to 12 cylinders.

Is there any subsidy for the Gas pipeline?

No, currently there is no subsidy on the Gas Pipeline connection however, the cost of Natural Gas is relatively cheap than the LPG cylinders. The government is yet to decide on expanding the subsidy scheme for piped connections when it comes to initial installation charges.
