What is the process for Passport Police Verification?

Passport Police Verification is an important step when it comes to the passport issuing process and required verifying the details of the individual. The following is the process that is followed by the police verification officer for verifying the details of the individual-

  • In Passport Seva Kendra, you’ll have to initiate the initial passport process wherein, you’ll have to submit your documents, photograph yourself, etc.
  • The passport Issuing authorities will send an application to your nearest police station which will be in your area circle
  • After the completion of the process, you’ll be assigned a police officer who will visit your premises for passport verification
  •  You’ll be contacted by the police officer beforehand for visiting the premises and timing the verification process
  • You can ask him/her to visit your premises mutually agreeing upon a date and time, make sure to prepare the documents beforehand
  • The police officer will visit your home on the decided date and you’ll have to show your documents to the officer
  • The officer may ask you a few questions which you’ll have to answer properly
  • You’ll also have to provide two witnesses or guarantee who will be in non-relation like a neighbor, etc.
  • This is done to ensure that they are living on the premises and are saying the truth.

  • CGHS /ECHS Card
  • Certificate of address having Photo issued by MP/MLA/Group-A Gazetted Officer on letterhead
  • Certificate of address with a photo from  Govt. recognized Educational Institutions (for students only)
  • Certificate of photo identity issued by Village Panchayat  head or its equivalent authority (for rural areas)
  • PAN Card
  • Photo Credit Card
  • Address card with photo issued by Deptt. Of Posts. Govt. of India
  • Smart card issued by CSD, Defence /Parliamentary
  • Current  passbook of Post Office / any scheduled Bank, having Photo

How to Check the status of the Passport Police Verification?

You can check the status of the passport police verification by following these steps-

  • Visit the official website of Passport Seva Kendra or passport seva app by following this link- https://portal2.passportindia.gov.in/
  • Now, click on the “Track Application Status” button and select the type of application form you’ve applied for as Fresh/Re-issue or Tatkaal
  • Enter the file number present on your form or date of birth and click on the “Track Status”
  • Now, you’ll be prompted with the various status of the passport-
    • Pending Police Verification- This status shows when the documents are not yet submitted to your nearest police station
    • Police Verification Initiated- beginning of the police verification
    • Police Verification Report Submitted- when the police officer has submitted the report

What if Police Verification for Passport Fails?

If the police verification fails, there can be various reasons like nonmatching of the information provided, any criminal record, etc. You’ll still have a chance to come out and appeal against the verification failure. You’ll have to prepare documents to support your clarification case and upon carefully reviewing it, your passport verification will be re-processed again.

The following is the reason for the passport verification to be failed-

  • Incorrect information provided at the time of applying for the passport
  • Past criminal record or pending criminal case against the applicant
  • Anti-national or anti-social activities involvement

How long does it take for the completion of the police verification?

The police verification process can take anywhere from 2-3 weeks from the date of application. The time frame can increase or decrease depending on the type of area you live in like if you are in a tier-1 city then the process will be much faster, if you are in a remote area or a village then the process might be a little delayed.

Does police verification necessary if I apply for the passport on a tatkal basis?

The police verification will is an important step however, in the case of the tatkal passport application, the verification will be done after issuing the passport. The police will visit your premises after you’ve received your passport.

How long does it take for the passport to reach my home after the date of the application?

From the date of the application, the passport can take at least a month which involves, you visiting the Passport Seva Kendra, followed by police verification, and receiving the passport at your home via speed post.
