How to Surrender Duplicate PAN Card?

PAN Card is a basic requirement for the person who wants to participate in the financial system like opening a bank account or taking a loan. Every financial transaction has a requirement of the PAN Card Number. The PAN Card provides a unique 10 digit number that is unique to him or her for the lifetime of the individual or firm. In case there is a duplicate PAN Card Number for the same person or firm then it is illegal and is punishable. A fine of Rs.10,000/- will be charged from the individual who will be caught for using the two PAN Card.

If you have two PAN Card in your name then you have an option to surrender the PAN Card without paying any fine. You can surrender the PAN Card both online as well as offline using the online portal of the NSDL. For surrendering the PAN Card you can follow these steps-

Online PAN Card Surrender

  • Visit the online portal of NSDL using the link
  • Select the Application Type as “Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data/Reprint of PAN Card (No changes in existing PAN Data)
  • Fill the form and click on the Submit
  • Before submitting the application you have to mention the PAN Card Number of the surrendered PAN card
  • Copy the token number that is generated, an email with the token number is also sent to the mentioned email address
  • Now you will be redirected to a new page where you have to provide the document and e-sign
  • Scroll to the bottom left of the page and mention the PAN number you want to retain
  • Fill the personal details and mention any additional PAN card you want to surrender and click next
  • Upload the scanned images of your photograph, signature and the required documents
  • Now review your application details and click on the next button
  • Submit the payment via demand draft, credit card, debit card or internet banking
  • Now download the acknowledgment letter and sign it, attach the proof of document and two photographs. Now prepare it for posting mention on the envelope for Application for PAN Cancellation and send it to the following address

Note- If you are surrendering the PAN Card that is currently in use then you have to visit the Assessing Officer office to surrender the PAN Card. You cannot Apply online for this.

Offline PAN Card Surrender

You can also surrender the PAN Card Offline using the following steps-

  • Download and print the application using the link
  • Visit the Nearest NSDL Center with the form filled and the required documents
  • Once you submitted the form you will get an acknowledgement slip, which is to be sent to NSDL office. This letter should reach the office within 15 days of filing the request
  • You also required to send a letter to the Assessing Officer listing the duplicate PAN details and requesting for cancellation
  • You can also submit the form via post or by hand visiting the Assessing Officer office.

PAN Card Surrender in Case of Death of the Individual

If an individual died then the PAN Card associated with the individual has to be surrendered by the family member. A letter to the income tax officer for surrendering the PAN Card along with the death certificate and other documents has to be submitted. The process to surrender the PAN of a Company or PAN card Surrender is the same in case of the demise of Indian residents, NRIs as well as foreign nationals.
